cktraveler: Project: DIANA episode one: "Synthesis"

PROJECT DIANA: 1. SYNTHESIS
by Cynthia Wakefield

You were highly trained, successful, a leader in your scientific field or well on your way to becoming one. Over the course of your life you'd picked up a variety of skills, physical and mental, and found them all coming easily to you. It seemed only natural that, shortly after you'd made a significant discovery, you would find yourself approached by a government agent to work on classified projects.

Your codenamed contact erased your previous lives and put you to work retrieving and analyzing unknown technology. Alien technology. And you were not the only ones -- you fought a constant war against an enemy you barely understood, racing to find the armageddon weapon, a machine that in the wrong hands would annihilate the human race.

You failed. And yet you're still here. It'll only get weirder from here on out.

"Project DIANA" is a campaign LARP set in a world of alien astronauts, shadowy conspiracies, unknown powers, psionic travel, covert war and workplace romance, inspired by Torchwood, The X-Files, Philip K. Dick, Alfred Bester, X-Men, Sapphire and Steel, Ian Fleming, Richard Marcinko and H.P. Lovecraft. 18+ only.

  • Genre: Science Fiction Horror/Conspiracy
  • Estimated length: Four hours
  • Number of gamemasters required: 5
  • Number of players required: Precisely 8 female and 3 male

Project: DIANA "Synthesis" will be running on October 21st in Waltham at Brandeis University. We're currently accepting online applications at the Brandeis LARP Conspiracy website -- click here to apply!

(Due to the small size of the cast in the first episode we will be considering all applicants for the October 13th private alpha run as well. Later episodes have larger casts and/or hordes, so if you don't get into the first episode you may still be able to get into later ones.)

cktraveler: The Phoenix Flap and Project DIANA

Within the next two weeks, the Immortal Sociopaths will be controlling "The Phoenix Flap" at our private performance space at the House of Three Cups. The 1:00 PM run has many roles taken but many more remain.

It's a warm night outside, and in the dining hall of the house at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place (and in the living room, and a few in the den, and one in the foyer with his arms folded glowering at the wall) an array of the most extraordinary individuals has gathered to discuss a matter of utmost importance and urgency.

After the tea.

"The Phoenix Flap" is a partyLARP set in the universe of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and concerns the final meeting of the Order of the Phoenix before Harry's fifth year in school. There is intrigue, there is suspicion -- no, I don't want any biscuits, thank you -- there is magic afoot and -- yes, I'm quite certain -- there is at least one person there who decidedly does not belong. Anywhere between 15 players and the fire marshall's maximum occupancy of the hall.

cktraveler: "Still Places" Final Casting Call

Casting is currently open for "Still Places," a theatre-style LARP set in the Shoujo Kakumei Utena universe ten years after the Duel of Revolution.

The Ohtori Academy Alumni Association is pleased to request your presence at the Ohtori Academy Class of (date smeared and illegible) Ten-Year Reunion at the Suzaku Hotel in Minato, Tokyo.

Program and dancing will begin at eight o'clock, and it will all be over at the stroke of midnight.

A reunion is the perfect opportunity to encounter those you thought you'd never see again and experience memories you thought were behind you forever. Don't miss out on this one final opportunity.

No registration fee; all invitees are welcome. Refreshments will be served. RSVP absolutely required.

"Still Places" had one successful run on March 17th (Good Plus ending) and will be running again on April 7th at Pandemonium Books and Games in Central Square, Cambridge, MA.

As it takes place after the series' conclusion, this fanLARP contains fatal spoilers for its ending. Most roles require knowledge of Shoujo Kakumei Utena, but there is one male and two female roles per run that can be played with minimal series knowledge.

Pregame begins at 12 noon actual time and play runs from 1 PM - 5 PM, with a one-hour wrap-up and cooldown afterwards.

If you're interested, please complete the questionnaire and e-mail it to the first-run gamemaster at yunatwilight%gmail%com (replacing % with other symbols as appropriate). If you cannot download it or require another file format, e-mail me and I will make it happen.

Current status: The game comprises 8 female and 4 male roles.
  • April 7: 1 female role, 1 male role, 0 assistant GM position available
We will consider cross-casting if someone is very appropriate for a role.

If there is sufficient interest, additional runs will be scheduled. Three months after the final run, the game will be made available to other troupes as a game-in-a-box.

cktraveler: "Still Places" beta test wrap-up

The first run of "Still Places" was an unqualified success both as a game and as a beta-test. I'd like to publicly thank all of my players (as well as my terrific co-GM, nevacaruso).

I'll be making the changes that the beta turned up, both those requested by the cast and those I noticed myself, in time for the second run (character sheets should go out later this week). Anyone who missed the first run -- the story worked perfectly, the game mechanics were quick and fun, and everything went wonderfully.

While I can't share all of the pictures -- many of them contain spoilers -- here are a few taken during the wrap party that I can share. (All cast members received all of the photos, needless to say.)

Utena and Anthy
Miki and Kozue
Touga and Saionji
The Shadow Girls

One female character will be added for the April 7th run. We are currently enthusiastically pursuing female players for that run -- most parts are still open. Just fill out the questionnaire and send it to yunatwilight swirl gmail point com.

cktraveler: Immortal Sociopaths Events

On Saturday, April 14th, the Immortal Sociopaths will be controlling "Kind Friends Together" twice at the Festival of the LARPs 2007. Both runs are currently full.

It was Jack who set everything up back in '89. He and his sister Annie inherited an old warehouse when their parents kicked it and decided to turn it into their own private bohemia -- a place where the two of them and their friends, lovers, and miscellaneous others could live and love without having to worry about the little ways in which life ties you down to the railroad tracks.

Everything gets shared in the Building. Money's never a problem; enough comes in to pay the bills, keep the power on and stock the pantries, and nobody really cares who's responsible for it coming in. Jack does the repairs; his boyfriend Ben does the cleaning. Art supplies and books for everyone's use. A roof over your head, unconditional friendship and love.

It worked so well for so long.

"Kind Friends Together" is a drama in two acts on the topics of art, sex, death, and trust. It is a "real world, serious issues" game, and players must be willing to deal with high volumes of angst, rage, and guilt; they should be ready for anything. Players should also expect the possibility of playing bisexual or transgendered characters. 18+ only.

On Saturday, April 21st, the Immortal Sociopaths will be controlling "Rose-Scented Dreams" at Anime Boston. The 10:00 PM run has only just begun soliciting players.

You live in the Playroom. There are toys and games and friends to have fun with. It's great when Anshey's your best friend, because whenever she's your best friend she always makes so much SENSE. There's this adult that's shown up. Anshey calls him Mister Akio, so that's his name. You think maybe he wants Anshey to be his friend, and that's why he's come. Maybe he wants to take Anshey away.

"Rose-Scented Dreams" is the Sociopaths' "other Utena game" and is a surreal nightmare for up to seven players. No previous series knowledge is required (though it is helpful).

cktraveler: Pre-casting for "Project Diana"

My primary focus right now is on filling both cast rosters for "Still Places" -- we've nearly got a full house for March, but we're still missing two players and two gamemasters; we have GMs for April but only three cast.

Please, at this point I would count it as a personal favor if anyone would be able to take an Assistant GM/Shadow Girl slot for the March game.

After that I'm going to be working primarily on Project DIANA.

Here's the scoop: Project DIANA is a secret governmental? corporate? private? organization seeking the technology of ancient Earth civilizations, recovering it, and keeping it out of the hands of those who would misuse it. Under their controller, a sentient intelligence from a previous era, they use a combination of archaeology, covert ops, and brute force to save the human race from itself. Every member of the team gave up their outside life entirely for the privilege of knowing that which no one else can ever be allowed to know.

Of course, when you take a bunch of people and lock them up in a room underground, only letting them out on missions and giving them strict instructions to maintain no outside ties, things start to happen between them.

Project DIANA is a campaign game, with (to the greatest degree possible) the same players maintaining the same roles throughout. Inspiration comes from a lot of different sources, though the biggest are definitely Torchwood, The X-Files, Philip K. Dick, Alfred Bester, Ian Fleming, Richard Marcinko and H.P. Lovecraft. There are also some Sailormoon in-jokes in the character names, for which I apologize. I'm borrowing an idea that Star Trek mishandled and doing it correctly, and some of the character dynamics are distinctly Whedonesque.

The standard warnings: this is not a "triggery" LARP. However, all characters are bisexual and a few of them are kinky in one way or another. I'm classifying the game as adults-only because of what's going on off-camera, though on-camera it'd only be rated a soft R. I'm also telling you right now that not all of the apparent cast are likely to survive the first episode.

I am not currently soliciting players, since after all the first run of the first episode won't be until late summer! I will, however, take "pre-registrations" -- if you are very interested, interested enough to clear your schedule for that weekend when it comes up, interested enough to do your best to make it to subsequent games in the campaign ... then I might just be convinced to cast you now, before the writing process is complete, and customize the character to some of your specifications.

  • Restricted alpha-test on March 17th in our private space;

cktraveler: Welcome to the Immortal Sociopaths LARP Troupe Community!

Greetings to all of you who have strayed into our less-than-secret lair ...

The Immortal Sociopaths are a theatre-style live-action roleplay trouple based in the Boston area. We are writers, organizers, and creators, and we conduct games regularly at our various nexi of power: our private space known as the House of Three Cups and the secret sub-basement of Pandemonium Books and Games in Central Square, Cambridge.

The name can be quickly and simply explained: it derives from our favorite question on the casting questionnaire for our first game. It also makes an excellent band name.

Our games can generally be divided into two categories:
  • original stories set in borrowed worlds ("fanLARPs");
  • original stories set in original worlds.
The former game type will often carry with it some sort of familiarity requirement with the world in question; the latter game type requires nothing but an open mind and willingness to cooperate. We tend to alternate between the two.

In both cases we work theatre-style. When you apply for one of our games you will receive a questionnaire; filling this out accurately will allow us to cast you in a suitable role. You will then receive a fully detailed character sheet and a copy of the customized rules for that game by e-mail. Costuming for the role is strongly encouraged whenever possible.

Incidentally -- like any good supervillains, we don't reveal all our plans to even our closest allies. Not all of our games are written cooperatively amongst the entire troupe, and very often one of us will be nothing more than a mere player in another's game. After all, we have to keep you guessing ...

The current permanent membership of the Immortal Sociopaths consists of Tory R. (wired_lizard) and Cynthia Wakefield (yunatwilight). We are looking to expand, and experienced LARPers who have participated in our games at least once as a player and once as a gamemaster and would be interested in collaborating on future evil schemes would be advised to contact us.

If you would simply like to be added to our mailing list to receive notification of future games and events, e-mail us and we will be in contact.
